About This Product

Product Description

Shield is a pour-on fly repellent for horses and is the only pour-on fly repellent for horses available. It aids in the control of synthetic pyrethroid susceptible nuisance flies and biting insects and aids in the control of Queensland itch in horses.

Features of Shield:
  • Quick and easy to apply.
  • Cheaper per application than spray and wipes.
  • 250mL treats 1875kg of body weight (Approx 6 horses).
  • 1L treats 7500kg of body weight (approx 24 horses).

Treatment as an aid in the control of nuisance flies should be applied every 6 weeks, or as required depending on insect pressure. The efficacy of SHIELD can be influenced by rain and activities such as brushing, washing, rugging, heavy riding, etc. For best results, allow 12-24 hours for SHIELD to dry before exposing the horse to these activities.

< 100kg: 10mL
100kg - 200kg: 20mL

Apply the measured dose along the backline, ensuring that the mane & rump are treated. Take care to avoid eye contact.

Skin reactions may occur if Shield is applied during hot weather.

Assess the sensitivity of a horse's skin to Shield by applying a small stripe of Shield (10 - 15cm long) at the base of the horses's neck and observe the area for 3 days.

Horses don't like it, needs to be applied every couple days in Qld humidity.

I bought this thinking great do not have to apply as much. The label says it's good for rain, sweating, etc. But not good for Qld humidity. I have one horse that sweats a bit. 3 out of 4 ended up being eaten by mosquitoes after applying. All my horses stand still when repellent is put on them, but this one they dance around, they really do not like the warm feeling of Shield. For the price and how long it lasts in humid climates I really wouldn't recommend.

Effective

I have found Shield pour on to be an effective and easy to use fly and other insect repellent. I do find that I need to give my horses legs a little more attention to keep the insect away from that area. Overall, though, a very useful product.
